The University of Connecticut has contacted 72,000 students and personnel after a rootkit was detected on one of the university's network servers. The server contained personal data for every user of the university computer network, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, and telephone numbers.
Rootkits can be used to maintain a hacker's accessed to a compromised computer or network, mask the fact that the system has been compromised, and collect system information. It's believed that the rootkit was placed on the server in 2003. It was detected when someone attempted to access a network server with an illegal password. The affected server was immediately taken off line.
All users have been sent an email or letter informing them of the security breach. However, university personnel stressed that this was a precaution, as the personal details were not held in readable form, and it is believed that no data was accessed.
